Tonight, you will be reading section 2-2 of your textbook, titled Acceleration. Pay close attention to the equations and graphs. We will be discussing this in class on tomorrow. Here are some general rules:

While you are reading get a picture of yourself riding on a subway train and imagine how you would feel as the train constantly accelerates (both positive and negative). What do you think is happining?
After reading, send your explanation of the following:
As a margle rolls down an incline plane, describe the motion of the marble at the top and bottom of the incline. If you increase the angle of the incline, what happens to the rate of acceleration? What is the maximum amount of accelertion for any falling object on earth?
Look at the graph on page 50, if the graph continues, the velociy would become negative. What does this indicate about the object?
I may not be able to answer all of the question tonight but will read them all. If not I will address them in class.

Wouldn't it be, as the marble rolls down it will pick up it's velocity sort of like the train on figure 2-9 and therefore the accelaration will also increase?
If an object were to be moving left going backwards, technically wouldn't it's acceleration be positive?...It made sense in My head
Yeah Hope because if you'd take a look at the marble from how it starts it has to increase some way to get to the end of that plane. Therefore in order for the velocity to pick up the acceleration would have to increase.
At the top of the incline the marble is at rest and has no velocity or acceleration, after it begins it's decent it gradually gains velocity due to the gravity affecting the marble. At the bottom of the incline, depending on whether it's stopped their or not, the marble levels out, and begins losing velocity because of negative acceleration due to friction. By increasing the angle of the incline, you are giving the marble a more vertical drop adding to it's overall speed. It would also cause the marble to accelerate faster than on the first incline, and it would near the maximum velocity due to gravity, which is 9.8m/s/s.

The velocity of the marble would increase as the incline became steeper...........until the marble started falling, then it would travel at the same velocity of 32.2 feet per second going downwards until impact with something
Kelsey, if you are cadavkel000, then you are correct because the object is increasing it's acceleration because it's actually going somewhere, but in terms of the relative direction given it would have negative velocity from the starting point.
But if you increase the angle of the plane it would make it go slower in a way instead of faster like it would go if the angle was steeper
Of course in the beginning the velocity is zero because it hasn't started its motion then it speeds up due to the incline , and will slow down at the end due to the initial velocity fading off. The Incline will increase the velocity due to a higher ateep. and idk about max acceleration

If the graph on Page 50, continues the velocity would become negative indicating that the velocity is decreasing over time.
The motion of the marble should be having a gradual increase then decrease at a certain point. And if you increase in the incline angle then the rate of acceleration should increase.

i disagree with you hope if you increase the incline the speed would increase instead of slowing down.
On the marble question, I think that when the incline is steepened, the acceleration becomes more influenced by gravity's pull, which is something like 9.8 m/s. Something like that. I didn't really read everyone's posts so i have no idea if this is already answered
Students, think about this. If you wee to fall from a building with an initial speed of 0m/s and you fell for ten seconds, you velocity would increase due to gravity, so at 10-s, your speed would be 98m/s. The same thing happens on an incline plane. Your speed increases, at the bottom you reach maximum speed.

i don't really understand... what does the train have to do with the marble? i get that acceleration and velocity increase/decrease based on the incline, but what does gravity do?

In each question they both are accelerating.
finaly made it here ah.......tbe acceleration would be higher, because the marble is traveling the same distance but in a shorter period of time since itwould go faster because the ramp is inclined at a stepper angle.

and would it indicate that the object is loosing velocity?
When the train leaves the station its speed is increasing over time, and when it slows down its decreasing over time would that be constant??? because i don't thinks it is.
i thought that velocity stays constant but the speed changes on occations??but i agree that the marble is like that train... well i was thinking that the accelaration increases
The velocity of the marble will increase as the marble continues down the incline. If it begins to fall then its velocity would become 32.2 ft/sec until something stops it or hinders it.
wont increasing the angle that the marble is dropped increase the marble's acceleration?
As the marble rolls down the incline it would pick up velocity and as the marble reached the bottom of the incline it would abruptly stop due to impact. If you increase the angle of incline you would be incresing the rate of acceleration because of the greater pull on the marble by gravity. I think...
the marbles acceleration would increase if you make the slope steeper to do the fact that the marbles intial traveling time has been shortened because the ball can move faster on a vertical slope than on a horisontal slope so therefore the velocity of the object is also increasing.... is that right?
If the angle of the incline is increased(To a max 90 degree angle), the marble's acceleration would also increase to the max. Once past 90 degrees, it would slow down.
Wouldn't the maximum amount of acceleration depend on the weight of the object?
Also, does the negative velocity mean the object is going the opposite direction, but same speed depending on the acceleration?
When the marble rolls down it gains velocity and the accelaration also increases because the incline angle gets steeper :P

the marble would have the least amount of velocity at the top and the most velocity at the bottom of the ramp because as the marble rolls down it would begin accelerating. And if you were to make the ramp more steep it would increase the acceleration of marble.
How do the train and the marble have anything in common, besides the increasing velocity. I read the dry/dull section and did not quite understand what I was reading. Please help me as to what we read about.
When the decline is steeper it increases the velocity until something stops it.
As the marble goes down incline the velocity would increase. If the angle of incline were steeper the marble's velocity would be increased also. The steeper the incline the faster the marble will go.
To me... everything made sense up until the point where the book talks about the strobe photograph of the moving ball. Is it saying that the velocity adds on to the previous .1 seconds?
Other than that, the example about the train is logical... if the train is moving right then it accelerates, if it doesn't then there is no acceleration, and once it moves away the acceleration has to be negative.

Is it like 9.8 m/s or something? Cause that's what Google told me but anyway, the velocity on the graph on page 50 becomes negative meaning the object's velocity is decreasing over time and doesn't that mean the acceleration is decreasing too? Uh, idkk. I'm kinda confused now.
The marble rolling down the hill would increase in velocity the closer it gets to the bottom, and have the highest velocity as it reaches the bottom of the hill right? and raising the incline would only increase the velocity. But wouldn't the train be different becuase of all the nesscesary stops? And wouldn't it have the greatest velocity between two stop before it had to slow down for a stop again?
Would it be faster to just drop on object falling straight down, or from a steep incline? Cause if they both stay at a constant speed would they eventually meet up or is one faster then the other?
Also if the graph on page 50 were to contine according to time, wouldn't the velocity stay the same for how ever long the stop is and increase as it continues its route? Because since the direction never changes i dont think it would have a negative velocity (but im not positive).

from what i understand if the angle is incline then that means the marble would rolled backwards making the rate of the acceleration to increase....

Anyway, the marble would have an increasing acceleration as it began rolling down the ramp picking up speed. Then, once it reached it's max speed it would have zero acceleration and would be moving at a constant velocity.
Oh, and the rate of acceleration would increase if you increase the angle of the incline.
At first it diesnt have velocity but As it goes steeper the marble will go faster
The marble gaining velocity and exclamation is kinda like the feeling you get on the train..... As the train speeds up, it is gaining its velocity faster then you because your not attached to the train, and your insides to yourself very well, therefore the feeling of speeding up comes into play. Although just like the marble, nothing can just go a certain speed, it must accelerate first.
The marble's acceleration should increase as the slope inclines more and more because the steeper it is the faster the marble should roll down until it reaches its maximum acceleration which is 9.8m/s.:)

If one were to increase the angle of the ramp, the ball's rate of acceleration would increase. This is because the ramp prevents the ball from falling straight down twards the center of the earth at 9.8m/s/s, the ball is slowed by friction. A steeper ramp provides a more direct route to the center of the earth, redusing friction and approching the maximum acceleration due to gravity
To answer the innital question, the ball would be slower at the top of the ramp, and would accelerate (due to gravity) on it's way down, so that its speed at the bottom of the ramp would be faster than that at the top.
